On Saturday, April 26th, 2003, the New York City Region of NYSTESOL will
hold a One-Day Mini Area Conference at Pace University's New York City
campus. The conference is co-sponsored by Pace University, an institution
which was directly affected by the attacks on the World Trade Center on
September 11, 2001. Pace is at the heart of a resurgent downtown New
York City area today.
Among the day's events will be a presentation on "Balancing Academic
Learning, Speech Science and English Language Arts," which will summarize
the findings of a study of ESL acquisition with college students enrolled
in an Introduction to Psychology, Sociology or History course using a
sheltered English methodology. Another session, "Teaching ESL in a
Climate of War," will address the question of how educators can advocate
for students in a climate of war and insecurity, and will explore the
implications for international students, ESL teachers and others. "Using
Poetry to Develop Students' Own Voices" will be a demonstration to show
how having ESOL students write original poetry in English helps them
to find their own voices in that language. One more presentation is
titled "Teaching Politeness," which will present a study in teaching
pragmatics to see whether instruction in
politeness can improve classroom culture and management strategies
in a junior high classroom.
Registration begins at 8:15. Breakfast and a hot lunch are provided,
as well as a wine and cheese reception. The cost for NYSTESOL members
is $30 (early registration by Friday, April 11th) and $40 on site. The
cost for non-members is $40 (early registration by April 11th) and $45
on site. Those who become members of NYSTESOL at the conference are
eligible for the on-site member registration rate. For more information
