Proposal for Employment Equity Issued on TESL-JB Listserv
Members hurry to qualify for consideration at TESOL 2002
On Tuesday, March 5th, 2002, members of the TESL-JB list received
an email from Karen Stanley (TESL-JB list manager) regarding a proposed
resolution calling for TESOL involvement in "Campus Equity Week"
and Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor (COCAL) conferences.
The resolution was written by Mary
Ellen Goodwin and there is a very tight deadline for getting the resolution
onto the agenda at the TESOL annual business meeting in Salt Lake City
next month.
According to Stanley's e-mail, TESOL members are eligible to print
out the resolution (see the copy provided below), sign it, write in
their TESOL membership number and FAX the item to Annela
Teemant, Chair of the Rules and Resolutions Committee, at
FAX 801-378-3570.
Stanley adds that 10 signatures are needed and the deadline is
either May 8th OR EARLIER. She suggests also e-mailing
Goodwin (Megsplace@earthlink.net)
to let her know you're supporting the resolution and e-mailing
Teemant (KaareT@aol.com)
to advise her you're faxing the resolution.

RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF
CAMPUS EQUITY WEEK (CEW) and
CONFERENCES ON CONTINGENT
ACADEMIC LABOR (COCAL)
Whereas TESOL has gone on record as affirming that high-quality ESL
programs must be available to nonnative speakers of English to assure
them a reasonable chance of achieving proficiency in English, and
Whereas TESOL has further gone on record as affirming that part-time
teachers by the nature of their employment are under constraints which
prevent their full participation in programs for which they are
only provisionally hired, and
Whereas TESOL has a history of declaring its concern about an excessive
use of part-time instructors, endorsing in 1999 the statement of purpose
of the Coalition on the Academic Workforce (CAW) and in 1998 the
National Council of Teachers of English's (NCTE's) statement on
part-time employment, and
Whereas TESOL has been a partner in promotional campaigns that forward
the TESOL mission, such as International Education Week 2001 to draw
attention to the role of international education in creating
understanding and promoting tolerance, and
Whereas the profession of teaching ESOL is among the most widely
exploited by the use of many part-time, adjunct, or otherwise
contingent faculty appointments of any field, and
Whereas TESOL is the steward of the profession of teaching ESOL and
its practitioners,
Be it Resolved that TESOL join forces with peer disciplinary
associations in supporting, in spirit and in kind, Campus Equity Week
that seeks to draw attention to the unprincipled use of contingent
academic labor where regular tenured faculty, whether full-time or
part-time, would be more professionally appropriate, and
Be it further Resolved that TESOL continue its support for the
annual conferences of the Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor
(COCAL), and, as part of that support, underwrite the expenses involved
in sending at least two representatives.
